Shigeo Gocho, a Japanese photographer best known for his book “Self and Others.” Gocho suffered a spinal caries when he was 3. Although he survived, he was left with a condition that was extremely painful and stunted his growth. Two years before his death at age 36, he published “Familiar Street Scenes,” a book of gorgeous color street photos, all of which were shot from a distinctly low angle because he was only as tall as a child. His intense curiosity is palpable in these pictures and his determination to engage the streets with his camera in spite of his physical afflictions is extremely moving.
