Photo artist interview #27 - Daniel Augschoell

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Landscape and People

• What’s your weapon of choice?

A 6x7 medium format camera.

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

Somewhere in the middle of the mountains.

• Why do you take pictures?

Because it makes me look at the world with much more attention and awareness. Since I’m making pictures I’m a lot more concentrated on what surrounds me.

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Probably waiter or bus-driver. Seriously, would love to be a writer.

• Sleep, Eat, Sleepwalk while eating?

I do a lot of sleep talking.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color ? Usually color, sometimes B/W. It depends on the project.
Film or Digital ? Always Film. I use the digital technology just for the post-production. Scanning negatives and printing.
Studio or Location? Location
Night or Day? Overcast Day
Portrait or Landscape? Both together.
Captain Hero or Cartman? Pumuckl

• What is your most treasured possession?

My books.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

At the moment: Doug DuBois’ …all the days and nights. Tod Papageorge’s Passing through Eden and Robert Adams’ What We Bought: The New World.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Joel Sternfeld, Robert Adams, August Sander, Alec Soth, Bernhard Fuchs, Andrew Phelps, David Spero, Clare Richardson, Matthew Monteith, and so on.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Read books, not just about photography and focus on a specific project.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I found this walkie-talkie on a huge pile of wood while I was trying to photograph a waterfall.

• Any future projects or travels?

I’d love to travel around the U.S. someday.
