Photo artist interview #42 - JANET DANDRIDGE

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

I shoot all that speaks to me.

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Canon Rebel, Canon G

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

I actually don’t know, I haven’t been everywhere on Earth just yet. But thus far, my fav place on Earth is my Mommy and Daddy’s house in my hometown, chocolate city Washington, D.C. (For those folks who do not know, D.C. is called “chocolate city” because it’s predominantly populated with beautiful chocolate skin!)

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Hmmmm…Anthropologist, Archeologist, Social Worker, Musician, Painter, Interior Designer…I enjoy lots of stuff!

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

Swimming with sharks, they’re cool with me.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color? Both

Film or Digital? Both

Studio or Location?
Location

Night or Day? Both

Portrait or Landscape?
Portrait or maybe both

Dark Wing Duck or robot chicken?

Yoooo, both – Dark Wing Duck because it reminds me of those tender years of youth, and Robot Chicken because it’s friggin’ funny, ha ha ha ha!!!!

• What is your most treasured possession?

My most treasured possession is my mind.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Fav photo book: World History of Photography – that book tells/shows you everything photo!!

Fav movies: What Dreams May Come, Princess Bride, Splash, and Edward Scissorhands.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Some photographers that inspire me are James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks, David LaChapelle, Joyce Tenneson, Dorothea Lange, and Matt Black.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Be you. Focus on what drives your spirit. Photograph everyday as often as possible. Enjoy it all.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

Soooo, in short: The photo below is my interpretation of the genocide and civil wars that have been going on in northern Uganda for over 20 years!! Amongst the victims of that war are babies, little babies who have nothing to do with the war – they don’t even understand war entirely. Since I could not go there to document what’s going on, I decided to create imagery that could speak to the international community, to make all of us aware. This photo was used in an auction at the House of Blues (Sunset) in Los Angeles, CA, to raise money and provide resources for those Ugandan children.

• Any future projects or travels?

Currently, I’m working on a project called Faces. It is an examination of the faces of Black folks – all the Black people that I can find who will let me take close-ups and extreme close-ups of their faces! Everyone has moments when they want to know what’s going on in someone else’s mind, and looking at their face, staring into their eyes, their spirit, can unlock the mystery or make that person even more mysterious. I’m curious, so I figured that other folks would be curious too. Initially it was a project that was supposed to be displayed in downtown Los Angeles for Black History Month 2009. But when I began to shoot the project, people responded so well that I extended it thru January 2010. Hopefully it will be ready for Black History Month 2010. I’m also hoping that the Obamas participate – I’ve written them letters. In addition to Faces, I’m working on a project tentatively titled Mirror Image. Mirror Image is about people and the invisible masks that are worn on a daily basis – the masks that serve as the representative, not the actual individual. Some questions that will be answered in Mirror Image are, “Who is the individual internally and externally,” and “Why do folks judge the individual (especially people we do not know) when we truly do not know the individual?”

As far as traveling, I’m planning on going to Spain, Costa Rica, and New York in 2010. Other than that, I will be exploring Southern California and wherever else the Universe takes me.

Photo artist interview #41 - TOD SEELIE

In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

I shoot where you're not.

What’s your weapon of choice?

Canon 5DII or Hasselblad 503CW.

Where is your favorite place on earth?

The places I haven't been yet, of course.

What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Realistically? Probably a landscaper. Idealistically? A travel writer.

Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

Sharks are sexier.

What do you favor:

B&W or Color? Color.

Film or Digital? Either.

Studio or Location? Location.

Night or Day? Night.

Portrait or Landscape? Landscape.

Dark Wing Duck or robot chicken? Huh?

What is your most treasured possession?

My cameras. I'm not so into possessions I guess.

Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Eggleston's 2 1/4.

Photographer/s that inspire you?

William Eggleston, Joel Sternfeld, Nan Goldin, Lee Friedlander, Andres Gursky, Todd Hido, The Polaroid Kidd.

Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Shoot, and keep shooting, and then shoot some more. Look at any and all photography you can get your hands on, to help delineate what you like and dislike and why.

What’s the story behind the photo below?

Not much of a story I'm afraid. That car exploded while I was at home cooking dinner. I heard/felt the explosion and knew what it was
from all the car fires that used to happen when I lived in Bed-Stuy. I grabbed my camera and ran outside, it was just down my block a bit.
Some smaller explosions were throwing pieces of the car all the way across the street. There had been 4 car fires on my street in 2 weeks,
but this was the only one I had been around for. I caught it a couple minutes before the fire department did.

Any future projects or travels?

I just finished traveling for almost 5 months. Junk rafts across the Adriatic Sea to Venice, and then riding bicycles/tall bikes through Indonesia and Japan. I'd like to just be at home for a bit at this point. Although I do have to go help my mom pack up her house and move to Florida pretty soon.

Where can we see more of your work?

Photo travel blog: suckapants.com

Professional site: todseelie.com

Some of my personal favorites: everydayilive.com

The weight of landscape: ofquiet.com

In 1 word, last thing you’d say if time stopped right NOW?

FLAVORPILL reviews I Shoot People tour

This cleverly titled one-man show turns mainstream media's perception of hip-hop on its head. Photographer Trevor Traynor notes the double entendre of "shoot" and uses it to explain his connection to hip-hop and a few of its finest artists. These honest portraits depict varied talent, including the Wu-Tang Clan, E-40, Mos Def, and M.I.A — to name only four subjects of the 175 prints on display. Traynor's "shots" are clear and representative, and even the most dedicated hip-hop skpetics can appreciate the beauty of Traynor's photography.

Photo artist interview #39 - SCOTT LA ROCKWELL

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

• Memorable moments

• What’s your weapon of choice?

• Canon 5d & Polaroid slr680

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

• 3 way tie between Tokyo, Matanzas de cuba , and Williamstown mass (where my mothers family is from.)

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

• Graphic Design & Calligraphy….both of which im still very active in.

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

• Toiling w/ the alligators. Like Al Pacino said in Devils advocate “Never let em see you coming.”

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color?

I like B&W but I feel color is much more challenging. Ithink a lot of people take a decent photo then make it black and white. Then its “artistic” don’t get me wrong there are some incredible black & white photographiers but it think a lot of people who shoot black and white are just being lazy.

Film or Digital?

Well film is so magical you never know what you will get until you expose it so fil will always be supreme. But I really enjoy the controllability and ability to rapidly work digitaly.

Studio or Location?

Location, I love city scenes.

Night or Day?

Night time, so much more going in the night.

Portrait or Landscape?

I get down with both trying to find ways to combine the two nicely

Dark Wing Duck or robot chicken?

Man Aqua teen hunger force all day!

• What is your most treasured possession?

• My Orishas

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

• Favorite photobook is “Popular” and my favorite movie right about now is either “no country for old men” or “there will be blood” the dialogues in those movies are amazing.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Ummmm….there are so many kinds…. war time photographers, documentary photographers, fashion, landscape, potrait…etc. I guess the ones that influence me the most are the ones I shoot with or hang with regularly Tara Chumpelik, Shane Nash, Kelly Nicolaisen, Leo Docuyanan, Amanda Lopez….and that fucker Trevor Traynor.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

• Don’t take the short route of buying a cam taking a million shots and calling yourself a photographer, also don’t just run up on any photographer you think is good and barrage them w/ a million questions. Take your time, do some apprenticeship, learn your craft. Even tho I shoot digital and haven’t been shooting for to long. I feel that the advent of digital photography has made people lazy and spoiled. You can just go on flickr now and see peoples fstop settings for shots or google how to set up your lights. If we rush to just try to be famous or well known photographers over night then we are missing the point of photography. Its not just be know to be someone who takes a good picture but to be some one who captures moments in a amazing and incredible way. Maybe that’s just me maybe im just old school.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

This is a collection of several shots from a recent trip to Japan.

• Any future projects or travels?

• I really want to go back to Japan & Cuba….I would love to get back down to the south and shoot.

• I am currently putting together a project interviewing tour managers and managers of artists for a project called “tour of duty”

• Where can we see more of your work?

• Right now
http://superduty.wordpress.com
or
http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottlarockwell
I got to get a official site together soon….arggg

• In 1 word, last thing you’d say if time stopped right NOW?

• Magnificient
