• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I shot this on Valentines Day this year. I was driving down the highway and saw these two kids selling flowers and pulled over. When I approached them they asked me if I was a cop, I started laughing and told them no, then they asked me to lift up my shirt, hold my camera above my head and turn around to show them that I wasn’t carrying a gun. I can only imagine what it must of looked like to the people driving by. After all of this I finally asked them if I could shoot their photo. They asked me if I was shooting black & grey film and if it was going to look like an Ansel Adams photo. It was definitely one of those experiences when you are glad you decided to pull over.

• Any future projects or travels?

I just finished a project titled “ Four Days in Dubai” it should be up on my site in a couple of weeks. I’m getting ready to start a new project up in Jamestown, CA and I’m getting ready for a trip to India in January.

Photo artist interview #44 - ANGELA DECENZO

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Memories.

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Canon 5DMarkII. I really like that camera. And I am currently obsessed with the iphone’s Polaroid app.

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

My mom’s yard.

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

I would just be really sad.

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

I grew up in Florida; I have to go with the gators.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color? Color.

Film or Digital?

I learned on film, and I kind of resisted the idea of digital at first. I have a nostalgic love for film, but the reality is that I’m shooting much more digital in the last few years. I’m trying to be less emotional about the choice and see them as tools to use for different situations.

Studio or Location? Location.

Night or Day? The transition, dawn and dusk.

Portrait or Landscape? Landscape. Although hmmm, the photo I submitted is vertical.

Garfield, Felix, or Tigger? Tigger!

• What is your most treasured possession?

When I was a kid, my mom reminded my sisters and me many times that if there was ever a fire, we were to save the photo albums before ANYTHING else. If my house was on fire, that’s probably what I would grab as I was running out the door.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Favorite book that I own: A World History of Photography, the textbook from my History of Photography class in school.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Tina Modotti, Cindy Sherman, William Eggleston, Dorthea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Pay attention to the edge of the frame.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

New Orleans. Warehouse. Beautiful girl.

• Any future projects or travels?

I am part of a photography team, DeCenzo-Cordova Photography. We are currently working on an Italian cookbook that will be taking us to Genova in the fall for truffle season.
