-How do you Rap?Well, according to some of the illest MCs, you learn from the greats
and the artists you think are dope and mix that all together in your
own style… that’s what the book “How to Rap: The Art and Science of
the Hip-Hop MC” is all about!
-How long did it take you to gather all these legendary emcee's into
one dope manifest?I spent about 2 years of doing pretty much nothing but interviewing
and then maybe a year or so sorting out all the info. The interviews
came to about 500,000 words and I put the best 90,000 or so in the
book.
-Can you give us one gem, one lil golden nugget you won't find in the book?Word, let me dip into my massive bag of unused MC quotables… here’s a couple –
Bootie Brown of the The Pharcyde:Your best bet is to try to just be flexible, if you try to follow a
certain rule anything can come and destroy your whole process, you may
have to go on the road, you may have to do this [or that]. So, you
having your favorite teddy bear and your water at a certain
temperature when you go into the studio – it may not be there, so you
have to make do with what you have.
Andy Cat of Ugly Duckling:I’d say for everything I write, I’ll probably use like one tenth of
it, but I keep it around. I heard a story once about The Eagles, you
know their song, ‘Life In The Fast Lane’… it’s a famous Eagle’s song.
I heard that the title came about because Don Henley was driving down
the freeway with some cocaine dealer, and he was driving too fast and
he’s like, “dude, slow down”, and the guy’s like, “aw no man, it’s
life in the fast lane”. He said it clicked in his brain and the dude
said, “hey are you gonna write that down?” and he goes, “nah man, good
ideas you don’t have to write down, you can’t forget a good idea”. So
I’m in the mind state of when you got a good idea, you come up with
something, you can’t forget it… if you forgot it, it wasn’t that good.
-Where can we learn more? The book’s website is -
http://www.howtorapbook.comThere’s info there, and also at the amazon site –
http://www.amazon.com/How-Rap-Art-Science-Hip-Hop/dp/1556528167-Where can we see a sneak peek? Here’s the amazon link where you can look inside the book –
http://www.amazon.com/How-Rap-Art-Science-Hip-Hop/dp/1556528167#reader_1556528167And Rap Radar recently posted up the foreword by Kool G Rap, peep game –
http://rapradar.com/2009/12/03/how-to-rap-kool-g-rap-foreword-Any Future Projects or Travel Plans?Hopefully I’ve got another Hip-Hop book or two in me, though right now
I’m just focused on making sure this one does OK!
-Dave Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?Well Roth had more flair, though Hagar was arguably more consistent
and brought more musicality. It’s a tough call, but to me Roth will
always be their quintessential front-man, he had that x factor.
-Seriously, How do I get a copy of this book, actually how do i get a
couple copies? It’s in stores now, and of course everywhere online… a bunch of
different order links are at the book’s site:
http://www.howtorapbook.com/order.html
-In 1 word, last thing you’d say if time stopped right NOW?D’oh!
-Shout outs?Shout out to Trevor Traynor for the dope Q-Tip photo on the cover of
the book, and to Philip Pascuzzo for doing the design work.
Editors Devon Freeny, Susan Betz, and my agent Barbara Braun, who all
worked tirelessly on making it all happen and making sure everything
was mad dope.
Oh, and obviously all the MCs -- those in the book and also those who
I didn’t get a chance to talk to -- and to Hip-Hop in general… peace!
Peace..Paul, thanx for sharing some knowledge.1
