Photo artist interview #55 - ANNA CHIPMAN

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Abstract flowers

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Canon 5D Mark ii with a 100 macro lens

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

My favorite place is with my family…however an actual location would be Costa Rica. I studied Spanish there for five weeks and found such peace living there. The thriving green forests and the ability to commune with nature were a great source of inspiration. It is beyond my ability to express how much I loved it there.

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Maybe abstract painting seems about the next closest thing to the way I like to work, I guess it would have to be that.

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

I am gonna go with swimming with sharks…you never know, it could be those tiny sharks at Sea World…not so potentially lethal.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color?

Color

Film or Digital?

I shoot digital but film holds a special place in my heart.

Studio or Location?

Generally studio, as the flowers move too much on location. Vitamin D from being on location is sure nice though.

Night or Day?

I love the evening/night when I can do my own work and I get to be home.

Portrait or Landscape?

Landscape

Dave Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?

Sammy Hagar....

• What is your most treasured possession?

I am in love with my 5D Mark ii. My husband likes to tell people I paid more for the camera than we did for our car. But you know it is such a great camera that it is easy for it to be a very prized piece of equipment.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Favorite photobook – Barbara Bordnick Searching
Favorite movie - The Wizard of Oz

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

A couple photographers who influenced me early on are Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham. Their work has forever changed the way that I look at photography. Daniel Sroka, Barbara Bordnick and my friend ValJean Anderson are some of my favorite living artists that I am influenced by.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Talk to other photographers, get their advice and learn something from their mistakes, you are still going to have to make your own and learn from those too. Find your passion and photograph that.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

Edge of Night was photographed at the very end of a deadline. I thought I had all of the images for that deadline but since I still had time I went back to my studio to shoot more. I brought an iris with me since this was a flower that had never revealed itself to me. Needless to say that is no longer the case. I love this image because it shows me that you never know when will be the time that that flower will show you something totally different than you have ever seen before. This image reminds me to never give up.

• Any future projects or travels?

I am going to be making a trip to the Berkeley Botanical Gardens sometime soon to soak up some Vitamin D.

• Where can we see more of your work?

Photo artist interview #54 - VICTORIA SMITH

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Candid Rock

• What’s your weapon of choice?

1950’s Minolta silver film camera’s

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

I don’t like saying because its one of the worlds best kept secrets so I will say ‘home’ which to me is that place in which we are understood.

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Something to do with outer space.

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

I don’t see a difference. It would bite.. irony intended.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color?

its like choosing between a foster child and a step child (B&W)

Film or Digital?

Film

Studio or Location?

Location

Night or Day?

I like natural daylight for shooting, however the night is my element for connection.

Portrait or Landscape?

Foster child, step child.. (Portrait)

Dave Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?

Roth baby

What is your most treasured possession?

I let everything go. But one time I temporarily lost a scarf my first love bought me at a hippie music festival 7 years before, and tears came, then the scarf was found in the street and I realized I did value a material possession, after all.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Is it cliché to say The Alchemist? Favorite movie I’ll go with one called The Bear. It follows an orphaned baby bear threw its journey of survival and magic mushroom eating. A great photo book is called The Journey is the Destination by Dan Eldon who was killed at 21 years old. But I have lots of ‘favorite’s”.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Jim Marshall, Baron Wolman, Michael Zagaris, Robert Altman, Annie Leibovitz back in the day, Anton Corbijn etc etc.. and the many average Joe’s.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Don’t put all your gear in a trunk of a car that is outside your friends’ hotel room. That car may not be your friends’ car and when you come out of the room, that car may be gone.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I had started photographing Coldplay when they were just breaking America with their first record ‘Parachutes’. I hadn’t seen Chris Martin in 3 and a half years when I did this past July and well, a photo in order.

• Any future projects or travels?

I do SXSW every year and that’s coming up in March. So if anyone needs anything shot in Austin in March, I’m there for the whole month.

• Where can we see more of your work?

Photo artist interview #53 - MAAYAN ZIV

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

What I see

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Canon 5d Mark II

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

My ideal; abandoned city with ballrooms, motels, gas stations etc.

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

I want to say filmmaker, but I’d probably end up a crazy cat lady.

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

Swimming with sharks while toiling with alligators.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color? Could never favor one!

Film or Digital? I shoot digital, but I also love film!

Studio or Location? Location.

Night or Day? Sunrise sunset.

Portrait or Landscape? Portrait

Dave Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar? Yo’ mama.

• What is your most treasured possession?

My sight! but in terms of material things… I don’t really care for stuff too much. I guess if my house was burning I’d save my camera, mostly because I’d want to shoot the fire as my house was burning down though.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Favorite movie- Some Like it Hot. Seen it over 30 times and never get sick of it. I know all the words by heart.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Right now, Gregory Crewdson, Andrzej Dragan and Erwin Olaf. I love artists with a twisted sense of humor and more so ones that are prepared to take a risk.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Find what you love and shoot it ‘till you hate it (although my guess is, if you really love it, you wont ever hate it.)

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I think what’s cool about this photo is that you don’t actually know what’s going on; there’s this element of mystery to it. I could tell you more about it, but I think I’ll leave you guessing…

• Any future projects or travels?

Got some travel plans coming up, I’m working on a series of images for an upcoming exhibition. Won’t give too much away just yet…

Photo artist interview #52 - CATHERINE DAY

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Therefore I am

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Mamiya RZ67 with a Phase One digital back. And a giant mug of anemic over-sugared tea.

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

The studio

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Ninja. Or working on how to bring photography back from the dead. Realistically, I’d probably be a child psychologist/some sort of counselor.

• Swimming with sharks or toiling with alligators?

Swimming with sharks. If I could bring a camera and some models with me.

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color? Colour

Film or Digital? That’s impossible

Studio or Location? Studio

Night or Day? I’m awake pretty much 24/7 but my mind comes alive at night

Portrait or Landscape? Portrait

Dave Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar? John McClane

• What is your most treasured possession?

My mind

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

That’s a tough one, I love so many movies, but my favorite would have to be The Lion King. I’m a Disney whore. I also love anything twisted with fantasy and macabre humour.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

Erwin Olaf, he’s incredible. And anyone who has determination to make their visions reality.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Look before you click. And just keep doing it. And smile at the same time. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

Hmmm. A lot of my work has a narrative behind it, but there’s not so much of a story behind this one. More the fact that I was given some latex to shoot on a model that loved to put her limbs in impossible positions, and I wanted to ensure that I captured the essence of the makeup, hair, wardrobe, pose and the models face all in the one image, with use of lighting and a set that would enhance, but not detract from all the components.
Although that sounds quite boring now. Let’s say she’s travelled from the future and fallen from a wormhole down onto my set and landed in a perfectly aesthetically pleasing pose.

• Any future projects or travels?

There are always countless ideas swarming inside my head. I have a permanent infestation of ideas.

• Where can we see more of your work?

You can check out my work at…

I also have a book available here http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/755320
And a cheaper (smaller) version here http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/911152

What a shameless plug!

• In 1 word, last thing you’d say if time stopped right NOW?

1 year anniversary interview #51 - PAUL EDWARDS

Once a week for the last year I have interviewed a New Photo-Artist to post and share with you.....This is interview #51. To bring you a lil something special for the 1 year anniversary I got the inside scoop from PAUL EDWARDS!!!
Paul Edwards just launched his latest book
-
"How to Rap"
-
Never-before-seen advice and guidance
from over 100 of Hip-Hop's most
acclaimed and successful MCs, including:

Big Daddy Kane - Nelly - Mobb Deep
Clipse - Black Eyed Peas - Twista
David Banner - Public Enemy - E-40 Cypress Hill - D-Block/The Lox - AZ
Kool G Rap - A Tribe Called Quest
Devin The Dude - Boot Camp Clik
Dilated Peoples - Pharoahe Monch
DJ Quik - Immortal Technique - NORE
Papoose - Royce Da 5’9” - Schoolly D
Slum Village - Jurassic 5 - Blackalicious
Little Brother - C-Murder - Killah Priest Crooked I - Tech N9ne - Masta Ace

-How do you Rap?

Well, according to some of the illest MCs, you learn from the greats
and the artists you think are dope and mix that all together in your
own style… that’s what the book “How to Rap: The Art and Science of
the Hip-Hop MC” is all about!

-How long did it take you to gather all these legendary emcee's into
one dope manifest?

I spent about 2 years of doing pretty much nothing but interviewing
and then maybe a year or so sorting out all the info. The interviews
came to about 500,000 words and I put the best 90,000 or so in the
book.

-Can you give us one gem, one lil golden nugget you won't find in the book?

Word, let me dip into my massive bag of unused MC quotables… here’s a couple –

Bootie Brown of the The Pharcyde:

Your best bet is to try to just be flexible, if you try to follow a
certain rule anything can come and destroy your whole process, you may
have to go on the road, you may have to do this [or that]. So, you
having your favorite teddy bear and your water at a certain
temperature when you go into the studio – it may not be there, so you
have to make do with what you have.

Andy Cat of Ugly Duckling:

I’d say for everything I write, I’ll probably use like one tenth of
it, but I keep it around. I heard a story once about The Eagles, you
know their song, ‘Life In The Fast Lane’… it’s a famous Eagle’s song.
I heard that the title came about because Don Henley was driving down
the freeway with some cocaine dealer, and he was driving too fast and
he’s like, “dude, slow down”, and the guy’s like, “aw no man, it’s
life in the fast lane”. He said it clicked in his brain and the dude
said, “hey are you gonna write that down?” and he goes, “nah man, good
ideas you don’t have to write down, you can’t forget a good idea”. So
I’m in the mind state of when you got a good idea, you come up with
something, you can’t forget it… if you forgot it, it wasn’t that good.

-Where can we learn more?

The book’s website is - http://www.howtorapbook.com
There’s info there, and also at the amazon site –
http://www.amazon.com/How-Rap-Art-Science-Hip-Hop/dp/1556528167

-Where can we see a sneak peek?

Here’s the amazon link where you can look inside the book –
http://www.amazon.com/How-Rap-Art-Science-Hip-Hop/dp/1556528167#reader_1556528167

And Rap Radar recently posted up the foreword by Kool G Rap, peep game –
http://rapradar.com/2009/12/03/how-to-rap-kool-g-rap-foreword

-Any Future Projects or Travel Plans?

Hopefully I’ve got another Hip-Hop book or two in me, though right now
I’m just focused on making sure this one does OK!

-Dave Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?

Well Roth had more flair, though Hagar was arguably more consistent
and brought more musicality. It’s a tough call, but to me Roth will
always be their quintessential front-man, he had that x factor.

-Seriously, How do I get a copy of this book, actually how do i get a
couple copies?

It’s in stores now, and of course everywhere online… a bunch of
different order links are at the book’s site:
http://www.howtorapbook.com/order.html

-In 1 word, last thing you’d say if time stopped right NOW?

D’oh!

-Shout outs?

Shout out to Trevor Traynor for the dope Q-Tip photo on the cover of
the book, and to Philip Pascuzzo for doing the design work.
Editors Devon Freeny, Susan Betz, and my agent Barbara Braun, who all
worked tirelessly on making it all happen and making sure everything
was mad dope.
Oh, and obviously all the MCs -- those in the book and also those who
I didn’t get a chance to talk to -- and to Hip-Hop in general… peace!

Peace..Paul, thanx for sharing some knowledge.
