Photo artist interview #72 - ALEXANDER MARTINEZ

In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Little victories

What’s your weapon of choice?

Yashica T4

Where is your favorite place on earth?

Melting in the backseat of someone's car, being driven home after a good night.

What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

Doodling

Dave Chappelle or David LaChapelle?

Duhhhh, Dave Chappelle

What do you favor:

B&W or Color?

Tri-X, because I appreciate the forgiveness.

Film or Digital?

Film, unless the photo is so stupid only my iPhone can do it justice.

Studio or Location?

Filmed on location in front of a live studio audience.

Night or Day?

I work all day, so nighttime is where it's at.

Portrait or Landscape?

Portraits fit better on a zine page.

Spike Lee or Spike Jonze?

Spiking the punch at prom.

What is your most treasured possession?

I'm no sentimentalist.

Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Favorite book about photography is What They Saw. It tells the story of LIFE Magazine and their photo staff. Interviews from nearly every photographer that was on staff, some right before they died. It is really great, tells a lot of back stories, lots of gossip. Each one is asked if they think photography is an art, and each one has a totally different answer. Real meat and potato photographers, my kinda people.

Photographer/s that inspire you?

Hamburger Eyes, my heroes forever. Internet homies, they know who they are.

Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Find your favorite photographers, study them, do it better than them.

What’s the story behind the photo below?

Walked outside of a party and saw this guy ready to pop the cork on a bottle of champagne. His friends we're begging him not to do it. He did it anyway. Right place right time, always keep your camera in your pocket! Tracked the guy down later and interviewed him, which you can read here: http://amart.tumblr.com/post/188737140

Any future projects or travels?

I always say I want to travel, but it makes me too nervous to leave town.

Where can we see more of your work?

My website, stopinternetromance.com

In 1 word, last thing you’d say if time stopped right NOW?

Uhhhh

Photo artist interview #71 - DEBORAH HUBER

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Life as it happens

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Hasselblad 500C and my Panasonic DMC-L10

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

That’s hard…Paris was beautiful when I visited…but maybe Philadelphia, PA, that is where I say I will retire.

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

A Fashion Designer…I would have to strengthen my sewing skills though!

• Dave Chappelle or David LaChapelle?

Dave Chappelle!

• What do you favor:

B&W or Color?

used to be black and white but in the past year I’ve really gotten into color.

Film or Digital?

Film but I do appreciate digital

Studio or Location?

On location for sure

Night or Day?

Day (magic hour)

Portrait or Landscape?

I love them both; both can be equally breath taking

Spike Lee or Spike Jonze?

Spike Jonze

• What is your most treasured possession?

My first instinct is to say my Hasselblad but I think it’s really all my old albums with photographs of friends and family.

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

My favorite photo book was this book of my mother’s about New York… I wish I knew the name of it. It was most likely from the 70’s or early 80’s, full of black and white photographs documenting New York life; when I was a kid I would spend hours looking though it. It’s one reason I love documentary photography. My favorite movies are Pulp Fiction & Back to the Future I or II not III.

• Photographer/s that inspire you?

I actually know these guys but non-the less I love their work:

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Take pictures of anything that inspires you. Learn the technical aspects of photography/lighting too...it'll save you a lot of hardship in the end and make your work so much better, study other people’s work that you like! As a teacher I had said "break down the picture and figure out how they did it."

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

Sometimes I work as a set photographer it is one of my favorite things to do. The picture below is of Matthew Martin from the set of the movie Baby Jane?; where all the main actresses are actually drag queens (Baby Jane? is parody of the 1962 movie What Ever Happened to Baby Jane).

• Any future projects or travels?

My next travel plans are a backpacking trip down in SoCal, a trip to Seattle and an East Coast visit.

This vintage sepia toned photograph of first wave immigrant Filipinos at the church I grew up in from the 1920s.

Gordon Parks, Eduardo Masferre, Sebastiao Salgado, Anthony Remington, Jim Marshall, and Rick Rocamura.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I was doing a behind the scenes photoshoot for director Gino Rocks who was shooting a video for Laroo the Hard Hitta. Little did I know that it was at DJ Q-Bert’s house! He was down for an impromptu photo shoot and saw the chessboard and the window light was hitting at the right time of day!

• Any future projects or travels?

My lifelong goal is to document Filipino culture. I get most inspired by capturing Filipinos doing “big thangs” because there was not man visible role models growing up that looked like me and I like to shed some light on those that are reppin’ for my people!
