Audyssey "South of Market" Iphone Audio Dock

This past June I shot the packaging photos for Audyssey's new iphone audio dock. San Francisco is the first of many cities that will have a collaborative neighborhood release with Audyssey. This iphone dock is the "South of Market" edition and is custom to the SOMA district of San Francisco. It will be available at Mac stores this holiday season. The shoot included product and lifestyle shots. Here are a couple selects from the session:

Photo artist interview #94 - BETH FLADUNG

• In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Humanity

• What’s your weapon of choice?

Pentax 6X7, Mamyia 6X4.5, Canon 5DMII…
It’s not the weapon, it’s who’s on the trigger!

• Where is your favorite place on earth?

New York City

• What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

fighting for the underdog

• What do you favor:

• B&W or Color? I love both but lean toward color

• Film or Digital?

Both… prob the best way to go: Shoot film/scan film/process digital

• Studio or Location?
Studio? What’s that?

• Night or Day? Lots of daylight please

• Portrait or Landscape?

Portraits unless the landscape shows an interesting human imprint

• Spike Lee or Spike Jonze?

Tough question, I adore them both, but I’d have to go with Lee because the message is most important to me.

• Dave Chappelle or David LaChapelle?

Equally important non-heroes of mine.

• What is your most treasured possession?

My dog –if he could be considered mine, and my camera

• Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Henri Cartier Bresson
Joel Sternfeld
Too many to name, I am inspired by so many!!

Hip-hop…. Glen E. Friedman, B+, Mike Schreiber, Clay Patrick McBride

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Look at lots of other work. Shoot!! Practice!! Don’t be afraid, show your work.
Move around within the photo industry, there are so many jobs that can teach you valuable things from how to expose and shoot to how to handle yourself. Top three in my book… assist other photographers, get a job at a high-end lab and see unedited shoots of all of top photographers, work for a magazine in the genre you aspire to be in.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I was in Florida photographing for my project about Motels and how they’ve become low-income housing when I found this motel and Angel, depicted here. Her situation was dire, she has no home and lives here in the motel. She couldn’t find work and her daughter was out working to support them. There was an air of unease about the place as it was filled with people doing what they could, some things illegal, just to scrape by. It’s very difficult to walk into a place like this and convince people to let you into their lives (I spent 20 minutes trying to convince the boy I photographed next that I am not police), but I feel that being able to bring their situation to light and tell their story is very important.

• Any future projects or travels?

One last blast for the motel project, traveling the Northern US route from East to West. Then pitching to book companies.

Got the Cover feature for the new issue of Moholy Ground showcasing my "Grown Home" series. A couple pages from the spread....

portrait of me by Amanda Lopez.

The project began during a road-trip from San Francisco to Reno with Brice Frillici. Brice is a multi-talented musician, painter, creator, and worthy travel companion. Along our route we collected audio, video, and photo which we later constructed into a four minute visual story titled the "Road to Reno". This video is the foundation to "GROWN HOME"

Photo artist interview #93 - SETH KUSHNER

In 1-2 words, what do you shoot?

Fascinating folks

What’s your weapon of choice?

Canon 1DS Mark 2.

Where is your favorite place on earth?

Brooklyn

What would be your replacement Hobby/Profession if photography was dead?

I would probably be a graphic designer

What do you favor:

B&W or Color? Color

Film or Digital? Digital, but it took me a long time to come around.

Studio or Location? Location. The real world wins out every time.

Night or Day? Day. I get sleepy at night.

Portrait or Landscape? Portrait 100%.

Spike Lee or Spike Jonze?

I have photographed Spike Lee on two occasions and a love several of his films, but Spike Jonze's aesthetic is more exciting to me.

Dave Chappelle or David LaChapelle?

Dave Chappelle. Again, I've photographed him, but also I think he's such a trailblazer and so hysterically funny and brilliant. LaChapelle is amazing, but his productions intimidates me. I'm more indie than Hollywood.

What is your most treasured possession?

Most treasured physical object would have to be my Yoda puppet from 1980. Actually, I'm lying because I don't want to be lame and say my iPhone. I lost it once and it felt like I was missing an appendage.

Favorite photo book and/or Favorite movie?

Photo book would have to be Taschen's Arnold Newman collection, because I look at it the most.

Movies would be Star Wars, Raging Bull, Citizen Kane. All classics by aeuteur directors.

Photographer/s that inspire you?

Newman, Avedon, Penn….the classics.

Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Shoot what you love and make every photo a product of your taste.

What’s the story behind the photo below?

The photo below is of Harvey Pekar, who you probably know from the film, American Splendor, based on his autobio comic series of the same name. He was a hero of mine and I go to take his portrait on two occasions last year. He just passed away in July, so I'm really glad to have had the chance to work with him.

Any future projects or travels?

I have several ongoing projects I've been working on. Leaping Tall Buildings is the working title of my portrait series on comic book creators. I've done over 75 in a three year period and I'm hoping to collect it into a book with essays on the history of American Comics. The site for it is - www.nycgraphicnovelists.com

I've also been working on a series called Icons of Fandom, which is a series of portraits of pop culture Icons (Patrick Stewart, Gary Coleman, etc.) all shot at fan conventions. I've got a bunch done and will be shooting many more this fall. Again, I'm hoping to collect them into a book.

Finally, I've been doing a "photo-comix" series called CulturePOP for ACT-I-VATE.com. It's a weekly series of profiles of interesting "real-life characters" and mixes photos and text into a format like a comic book. It a great melding of my love of photography and my love of comics. They can be seen at - activatecomix.com/creators?id=51

Photograph everything. You will find some of your best works are the ones that were the most randumb.

What’s the story behind the photo below?

This is a Polaroid of my childhood friend (Mitchell Keith) whom has also become my head assistant. Him and I always get drunk and sit and talk for hours. We both have the same view on life and I figured I would put how fucking cut throat it is into a imagery.

• Advice for the younglings out there looking through their first viewfinder?

Embrace a freethinking attitude, nothing is ever a failure nor is success an end to progression. Take chances with how you approach subject matter and learn how to feel with the camera.

• What’s the story behind the photo below?

I shot this while on my first visit to Haiti last December 2009. I was there 2 weeks before the earthquake traveling around with a friend. This was shot in Léogâne which is a town south of Port au Prince and was actually nearly the epicenter of the January 12th earthquake. This random guy with a shotgun escorted us around this area being developed into housing and hotels. Besides wondering if we were going to walk into a firefight, I just kept thinking, “will all these cinderblock and cement buildings withstand a hurricane, luckily they don’t have earthquakes here”. Scary and surreal image for me on many levels.

• Any future projects or travels?

Continue on my long term projects in Haiti and upstate NY. Probably
try and head back to China sooner than later.
